Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Collision Warnings
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) selected ZedaSoft to integrate collision detection and avoidance tools to research various means to alert UAV ground operators to possible collisions with other aircraft in support of FAA Special Committee 228. This special committee is working to develop the minimum operating performance standards (MOPS) for detect and avoid (DAA) equipment and a Command and Control (C2) datalink using L-band and C-band solutions to integrate UAVs in the National Airspace System (NAS).
The U.S Air Force’s Vigilant Spirit UAS simulator was integrated with the NASA developed DADALUS Artificial Intelligence (AI) decision support software using ZedaSoft’s CBA® for Simulation software framework. ZedaSoft developed collision awareness and avoidance displays to alert UAV operators to potential collisions with other aircraft. A collision scenario is shown in the picture above.
The FAA is currently conducting its second study using this simulator, as the first study produced valuable research findings. Additional simulator configurations and scenarios are being discussed for future studies.
